I think that this is the biggest benefit of the lucene split, and I am 100% in support. 9x can continue being supported while maintainers want to add new features, but there is no guarantee that things be backported (other than security and bad bug) or that releases happen.
Other projects do this and I think its a very successful way of transitioning between major versions. Im also excited for a 10.0, and think we should try to cut it in the summer and get all of the breaking changes we want in beforehand.
