doing the incremental commit as its own thing means we could do either
though. "changed files" tab shows it as the whole and just the commit shows the
incremental.
squashing everything means that if things work out we don't have to wait
for another round trip of communication for the ready-to-push commit though,
and I can use vimdiff with the previous change.
