No Glen, it isn't negative, just realistic (lets make this clear... I do the negative posts around here {grin}). In my 35 years of getting paid to program I haven't yet had a boss or client that said "Take your time, whenever it is ready will be fine!" (I have fantasies of finding this client {lol}) If working at Intel means no due dates then where do I send my resume!!

lol, sounds like nirvana.

Some of us have clients who are waiting for a mobile Linux OS for inclusion in real products, when we don't have dates to give our clients they get nervous and want to jump ship to some other OS. Even to products that look to be complete "vaporware" (such as Android for mobile computing) because these products are quoting time frames for release with lots of media fanfare that our client's read and believe!

So in my case I keep trying to calm the fears of my client and tell them to be patient, but this wont last forever, and I can't really blame them. (I get daily emails asking about an IVI BSP release, from one of my clients!)

Well, my position isn't possibly as pressing, but it's priority is increasing daily and will shortly become pressing. One of my targets for this year Q2/Q3 is to move to an up to date platform. Originally scheduled as an evolution of our current Fedora platform base. However, as Moblin has progressed and various opportunities have come up for us with hardware vendors, the idea of moving to Moblin as our base platform has become more appealing to me and certainly I could see it being a significant advantage for us. However, at the moment, I'm kind of in no mans land as regards knowing where to go and how to proceed. If I do decide to migrate to Moblin V2 then I'll possibly be in a position where I'll have rebuild and host the repository internally. We've a significant install base of existing customers using "legacy" low power intel setups (Celeron M's clocked at 600Mhz or 1.0Ghz). These customers will expect to be able to upgrade to future iterations of our product releases. And realistically these devices will be initial target for the upgraded software. We're also expecting delivery of new Atom based (I'm guessing Menlow platforms, I'm not to familiar with all the product/platform names) hardware this year, so juggling this could be difficult.

I guess what I am trying to say is that if the Moblin team doesn't have to work towards due dates, that is wonderful for them, but the rest of the world does and it makes it difficult for us (the Moblin fanatics) to sell the idea of Moblin to the people who fund our development activities without time frames. So anything you can do to help us sell Moblin to the "bean counters" is appreciated (recent developer posts to this forum have been great fodder to forward on to the clients adn has given me a little breathing room).

Well, I think that there has been some useful glimpses under the moblin kimono in this thread. I'd like to see a consistent effort on behalf of the people driving this project to keep as much information as regards planning, ideas, proposals etc. as public as possible. There's obviously a lot of clever people behind Moblins development. There's obviously a lot of well thought out technical goals. It would be great if we all had a clear understanding of all that though. At the moment it's all very "trust us, we've something special coming". Keeping everything to yourself, no matter how cool it is, won't foster a community. I accept that this is a whole new architecture and that there's a certain amount of r&d going into some of the planned features. But, like I've mentioned, we, the public/community haven't got a clear list of what those planned features are. However, I'll be patient. I many end up having to decide against Moblin V2 for the short term as I'm likely to have to make some final decisions on this in the next 2 weeks. If I do have to skip this release, I may still move in the Moblin direction for later in the year, especially when we do get our Atom based hardware. We'll see I guess.

Kind Regards,
