And it seems that getting RFC2510 compliant would not be very difficult,
at least for the challenge part: challenge is the same, except that
sender (that is, certificate subject) and public key need to be removed.
Or do I miss something?

Of course the response part will have to be improved a bit, as we will
have to find the private key without the sender or public key hint.
