That there should be as you claim mainly a "UI problem" is an opinion that has some support in the literature ("Jonny can't encrypt"), but I feel that it is much deeper than that; security should probably as in the case of Skype be transparent, not needing any UI at all. I start Skype and that's about it.

Well, I had to create my cert(s) once, that's correct. But from the minute I stored them in my smart card I'm using 'em everywhere instantly.
We can probably not get much further on this thread except that we violently disagree on for example the importance of S/MIME.
I wouldn't limit it to S/MIME, since client certs can be used just about anywhere for almost any purpose (authentication, signing and en/de-cryption). However I appreciate your contribution nevertheless and saw (previously) other work you did and you are trying to promote. Hence I tend to agree on our disagreement for now at leave it as is.
