For me at least secure messaging means authenticated messaging as well.

This serves only for authentication. Hopefully you aren't including email signing and encryption in those certificates.


I don't know what Eddy and Jabber intends to do but it must be something 
similar.


XMPP certificates provided by the XMPP foundation CA will always be verified in some form (validating the address space under the control of the user). That would be rather an XMPP message ping as opposed to an email ping.
