There seems to be an assumption here that the mailing list is in some way the "primary" access method to the discussion, and the newsgroup is a secondary method of reading it. I would note that, historically, that's not the case. We consider both those methods of reading Mozilla groups to be equivalent. If any method is secondary, it's the Google Groups-based web interface. (This may not be a helpful observation for you, but it is true.)
