Well, I hit the new feature regarding top-level domains .local 
which I used for my local Unicast DNS test domains on my Linux 
system (see also http://avahi.org/wiki/AvahiAndUnicastDotLocal).

Since I don't want to use MDNS, zeroconf or whatever at all
1. removing mdns4_minimal from /etc/nsswitch.conf and
2. adding "mdns off" to /etc/host.conf
made it work like expected for me.
