Much of what I would have said here has been said by other people, so I just want to add that going through old bugs, one by one, and determining whether they are still relevant *is* tremendously valuable, and you should not feel discouraged from doing it. But it is important that you actually check each one.
(When I've done this, more than half of the bugs *had* already been fixed or overtaken by events, and a fair number of the remaining ones did not have sufficient information to reproduce the problem, but about 25% were still live bugs.)
