For 4 months now, we've been dealing with intermittent segfaults in gcc during compilation, most often in IonBuilder.cpp. We've been tracking these failures in bug 820796. Given that this is pointing to a compiler bug, it seems unlikely that we're going to get much traction with fixing this on our side. So, what would it take for us to look into other Linux compiler options? It seems we're a few gcc versions behind at this point, so maybe upgrading to a newer version? What about clang?
As much as I'm a fan of Clang, a concern with switching builders from GCC to Clang is losing continuous integration coverage of GCC. I believe we considered this unacceptable when it was discussed a few months ago. However, if Clang is better for our users and/or our automation, we can reopen that debate.
