This feature was removed upstream and we won't add it back. In addition, your "patch" will just be overwritten when the next upgrade comes in 4.5 weeks.

In ubuntu 9.04, 9.10 there was a function in the /usr/bin/thunderbird script named moz_pis_startstop_scripts() for thunderbird 2. As I see this is missing in 10.04 for thunderbird 3.
