Please try deleting any local extensions:
cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
rm -rf extensions
and then log in again.
If the problem keeps happening after that then the next thing to try is
to avoid using the HDMI port. Because the HDMI port is likely wired to
the Nvidia GPU and that requires extra processing to copy between GPUs.
Instead I would recommend using an adapter on one of the USB-C ports to
get direct access to the integrated GPU.

During normal work load on gnome-shell, it's CPU usage is less than 1%.
But while playing a YouTube video in Firefox, usage jump to 10-15% and causes
the fan to spin loud.
