The laptop monitor stays on a consistent basis in-between all the monitors. Two independent variables exist, one dependent variable exists. Independent variable #1: Plugging in and out the docking station. Independent variable #2: Powering on and off the computer. Independent variable #3: Connecting and disconnecting the power supply. Independent variables 1, 2, and 3 all represent possible/potential cause-and-effect relationships here. But the one dependent variable is the fractional scaling consistently, over time, reverting back to 100% fractional scaling. Notes A.: I have anywhere from 1 to 4 monitors total connected to my laptop's intel processor at any given moment in time. With the default max being 3, Display Link allows for unlimited more.
Investigative tips: 1a. When unplugging my docking station from the laptop (through a usb A standard), it can be seen that main monitor (i.e., the laptop's monitor) stays at 125% fractional scaling. 1b. When reconnecting docking station to the laptop, main laptop integrated monitor (central to my multi-monitor setup) remains at 125%. 2a. Most of the issues stem from restarting the OS I believe. Will have to wait and see. 2b. Doing a full restart and then plugging in all the monitors again brings up zero problems. Doing a full restart with all monitors plugged in, while unplugging the docking station in order to allow for the OS to load, results in zero problems too. I guess the problems with the fractional scaling sticking went away. 2c. After re-trying to simulate the problem a third time through rebooting, I failed to replicate the problem. Suggesting that the problem has been fixed somehow once-and-forall. One theory is that it was solved on the Ubuntu or other software development team. Another theory is that after manually re-setting the fractional scaling each time one of my three external monitors was plugged in and pulled out (in different orders too), the system became more resilient to switching back to 100% fractional scaling over time. 2d. Full debugging of investigative step #2c results in the following effects: zero errors. This conclusive evidence suggests the problem is no more, at least as far as this installation of Ubuntu goes (noting that there have been no adjustments to Ubuntu made (except for the installation of DisplayLink).
