Thanks for your effort to improve Ubuntu by reporting this issue. Even
if I'm not able to reproduce the behavior you describe, the LANG value
below is very wrong, and a probable cause.

That's not a valid locale name; it should be pt_BR.UTF-8
Please tell us that you edited /etc/default/locale and/or ~/.profile
manually, or else there is a serious issue somewhere. ;-)
