When I said that 'pt_BR' is not a valid locale name, I meant that it shouldn't have been a valid locale name considering that this is Ubuntu, which by default only uses UTF-8. (I don't know if Lubuntu differs in this respect, though.) Anyway, it seems like you in addition to the pt_BR.UTF-8 locale also have a locale for latin1. Can you please let us know what the 'locale -a' command outputs? I'd guess that the lines pt_BR pt_BR.iso88591 are included in the list.
