Thank you for your bug report, are you sure it's just not the standard
display panel timeout? it reverts the setting if you don't click on the
confirmation button to avoid letting the user in a broken configuration
(if you get nothing on screen with the new resolution you can just wait
for the change to be reverted)

  mirror displays switch to extended displays automatically

Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  OS:          Ubuntu12.10 alpha
  Platform:  DELL  LATITUDE E6330 with IvyBridge

  Details:
  Seting the mirror diplays after connecting the HDMI. The mirror displays will 
keep
  about 30 seconds then switch to extended desktop with a black screen flicker.
  at the same time user can't set screen resolution because it is grey.

  But if using xrandr command to do mirror display, it will keep and not return 
to extended display.
  12.04 has no problem, it is a regression of 12.10 on desktop AP. 

  Reproducible: Always

  Steps to Reproduce:
  1.set mirror display from the display which under the application.
  2.wait for about 30 seconds.
