You have been subscribed to a public bug:
On Ubuntu 25.10 I encountered a remote desktop problem after an Xorg-
related configuration change was accidentally applied to the host
system.
The file involved was:
/etc/gdm3/custom.conf
The change was intended to force Xorg, for example:
[daemon]
WaylandEnable=false
In my case, this change should not have been applied to the host system.
It was meant for a virtual machine, but it was accidentally applied to
the real Ubuntu host.
After that change, remote desktop became unstable or unusable. RDP
connections failed, and during connection attempts gnome-remote-desktop-
daemon also crashed.
In my case, I fixed the problem by reverting that Xorg-related change on
the host system and letting Ubuntu run normally on Wayland again.
I think this is important because, on a Wayland-only Ubuntu setup, an
unsupported Xorg-related configuration should be ignored rather than
causing remote desktop failures or crashes.
So in my case, the issue was not caused by the remote client itself, but
by an incorrect Xorg-related host configuration on a Wayland-based
Ubuntu 25.10 setup.
Ubuntu version:
Description: Ubuntu 25.10
Release: 25.10
Package version:
gnome-remote-desktop 49.0-0ubuntu1.1
What I expected to happen:
I expected remote desktop to keep working normally, or for the unsupported
Xorg-related configuration to be ignored on a Wayland-only Ubuntu 25.10 system.
What happened instead:
After forcing Xorg through /etc/gdm3/custom.conf on the host system, remote
desktop became unstable or unusable. RDP connections failed, and
gnome-remote-desktop-daemon crashed during connection attempts.
