Short hairpins

I'm trying to typeset a score with a lot of short  hairpins, eg 
cresc/decresc across a single long note or two tied notes. Is there an 
easy way to do this? It looks like it might be possible to insert 
Lilypond commands to do it (some complicated combimnation of \after?) 
but that would be quite fiddly.
