Your configuration is really in /etc/exim4/conf.d for clarity, and the
initscript throws it all together in one big config for exim when
you're starting exim.

No, just edit /etc/exim4/conf.d instead, it's way simpler.

While we're on the topic of setting up exim for the first time, let
me make two handy suggestions that will save your sanity in the long

Dman has since redone this (link on /~dman/) and considers it better
than the version I recommend.  However, I the reason I suggest his
older spamassassin implementation is because it allows for each user
to have a ~/.spamassassin to have their own settings.
