The ALSA arch is included in the lastest kernels... It should work when you has configured you /etc/modules.conf ... You can use alsaconf package to automagically configure your soundcard... then you should put up you volume (with alsamixer or setmixer) and then enjoy!
It's not usefull install newer version of alsa... you have to upgrade that only if your module it's dummy!
