I still haven't managed to get sound up and running. It looks like everybody is stumped but I'm resubmitting the problem and including all that I gathered in the last attempt to get it working.
I installed woody stable kernel 2.4.18-bf2.4 When I boot knoppix it uses via82cxxx_audio and works. I have that module installed so I added the line to my "via82cxxx_audio" to my /etc/modules. The sound problem exists in root. What is worse is that when I have sound enabled and open the Gnome Control Center opened to the multimedia/sound window it won't close and the desktop stops responding to anything. lsmod output: Module Size Used by Tainted: P via82cxxx_audio 18144 1 ac97_codec 9568 0 [via82cxxx_audio] soundcore 3236 2 [via82cxxx_audio] bcm4400 29180 1 hpfs 61408 0 (unused) keybdev 1664 0 (unused) input 3072 0 [keybdev] usb-uhci 20708 0 (unused) usbcore 48032 0 [usb-uhci] lspci output: 00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc.: Unknown device 3189 00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc.: Unknown device b168 00:09.0 Ethernet controller: BROADCOM Corporation: Unknown device 4401 (rev 01) 00:10.0 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc.
