I am using Woody. I then compiled kernel 2.6.5.

As for the drivers they are compiled in not as modules.

Hmm. Compiled in, or as modules? If as modules, are the modules loading?

What version of Debian are you using? On Sarge, /etc/default/bootlogd is
part of initscripts, which I can almost guarantee you have.
