Sounds like a mismatch between kernel and module versions. Are you sure you installed the modules? Are you sure you are booting the new kernel and not the old ones? Trying moving /etc/modules out of the way so you don't load any (possibly old) modules at all. Also try using the Debian kernel builder package instead of hand-rolling.
