Hello.
Thomas G:
First off, I do not have arts or esd installed. XMMS plays music fine and many other programs have use of sound. Mplayer doesn't have sound when I play videos. Is there anything I can do... and hopefully without breaking my sound for other things.
It's hard to guess when you're not providing the actual output of the `mplayer your_movie.mpg` command and any info where did you get your mplayer from, but I'll asume that you're using the one from the Christian Marillat repository[1] anyway. ;o)
Your problem may be an effect of the new default; from the changelog:
mplayer (1:1.0-pre3-0.2) unstable; urgency=low [...] * Make alsa9 the default -ao option
Check the ao setting in /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf - I don't know much about sound in Linux yet, but ao=sdl works for me.

sorry, missed the original post,
also make sure you get the codecs from marillat too, I installed codecs manually (from mplayer site, iirc) and somehow they didn't work, they were recognized but most quicktime movies were without sounds.
I installed the w32codecs (from marillat) and since than everything seems to work ok. so make sure you don't have any rogue dlls around and apt-get install w32codecs
