It's hard to guess when you're not providing the actual output of the `mplayer your_movie.mpg` command and any info where did you get your mplayer from, but I'll asume that you're using the one from the Christian Marillat repository[1] anyway. ;o) Your problem may be an effect of the new default; from the changelog: mplayer (1:1.0-pre3-0.2) unstable; urgency=low [...] * Make alsa9 the default -ao option Check the ao setting in /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf - I don't know much about sound in Linux yet, but ao=sdl works for me.
