I think it's perfectly normal if remote access to retro 8bit computers
requires special efforts.  AFAICT, for the C64, all the support for
networking happens by attaching another computer (called "network card")
to your C64 and the two computers talk over a serial connection.
IIUC it's the network card which takes care of the TCP/IP protocol, so
I'd disagree with the "no way" above: the network card could be improved
to add support for the SSH protocol.
The network card is already a more beefy computer than the C64
itself anyway.
