Did you install using netinstall? If so, the network connection was
obviously used then. 

Did you use normal or expert installation? Did it ask for IP
configuration?

Have you previously turned off DHCP in the modem?

Even though you do not want to use it, try repeating the installation
with DHCP on. If it works, you can set up manual IP addressing as
normal later, and remove the DHCP client.

Just worth a try. If you haven't turned off DHCP, or this doesn't help,
then it's probably down to ip addr show, looking for the Ethernet
interface, and if it's not there, finding out why not. Maybe a missing
driver, or similar.
