Thanks so much ...
Why a server?
I have Direct Attached Storage (DAS) connected to my system. It is an 8-bay
box from Sabrent, which accepts all standard HDDs. This should easily be
able to handle 100TB. That way you do not have to maintain a server and it
should also use less energy in use.
Horses for courses.
If you're happy with "my system" (i.e. just one), then more power to you.
But if more than one system is doing things with that data, then, again,
"your system" is playing server; then, perhaps, it's a good idea to
optimize the box the storage is attached directly to for its server
role. More performant file systems like to be soaked in resources. ZFS,
for one example, is known to enjoy RAM for breakfast (it's working
with it!).
Cheers
That's not what I was getting at. My remark was not meant to suggest a
server was a bad choice. It was in reaction to this from the OP:
"to be connected from my Debian desktop"
To me that implies the need for a server might not be so great. And
buying a DAS will definitely be cheaper than buying a server. The 5-bay
Sabrent I am using was only a bit more than €200. I don't think you will
get a server for that price. This option will also bring with it less
work to set up and maintain a server. It might even be a more secure
option, depending on the scenario at hand.
