rtsp support in vlc

I can play an rtsp stream using ffplay, but not vlc. I could in the past 
when I used deb-multimedia to get vlc, but I'm sticking with debian 
repos now.

Anyone know how to add rtsp support to vlc? Do I need to rebuild it?
