Very much this. The times of "market occupation", where the behemoths
burn through investor capital to offer free mail service to you are
gone, now they want to monetize, the one way or the other. Better choose
a honest provider which recoups the costs up-front.

I don't know about fastmail. Posteo is one I can vouch for around here,
ISTR they offer their services also out of EU.
