Folks:
I have to set up an email address in order to administer some websites
for a client. This email address must be with a provider not hosted on
my principal domain's hosting computers. I'm running Thunderbird on
Debian Trixie. I'm based in the U.S.

I just need a free email address, preferably with POP3 which works with
Thunderbird, or IMAP if I have to. I'd appreciate any assistance along
these lines.
It appears there are additional requirements other than an external
email account like AOL, Fastmail, Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo:

What are the additional requirements?
I use a hosting service, let's call it myhosts.com. I have numerous
sites hosted there. I use my one gmail account to administer these
sites. I've added a customer who has two sites to host on myhosts.com,
and the admin address for that one is the customer's email. But she's
clueless, so I need to use an address I control for her sites. I'm
already using my gmail account for my other sites, so I can't use it for
this client's sites as well. Moreover, myhosts.com won't let me use an
admin email which is hosted on their servers, for obvious reasons.
Therefore, I need an email address not hosted on myhosts.com
("external"). I'm using Thunderbird as a client, so I need POP3 or IMAP,
and it needs to be free, because I host this customer out of the
kindness of my heart. Also, I need to be able to set it up in
Thunderbird, which appears to be impossible for a new Gmail address.
Hope that answers your question.
