This link suggests a few methods to recover the 'root' password. https://www.tecmint.com/reset-forgotten-root-password-in-ubuntu/ (should work for Debian Grub boot loader) If all methods fail - to save time and effort, it's best to reinstall Debian and restore your personal files from the earlier backup (see above).
