Are you sure the keyboard works, properly ex. (no dead keys)?
I have a Dell Latitude E6500 and all of the keys on the keyboard work
fine.

I've tried "pc105" (default) and "latitude" and neither echo the hash
symbol (Shift-3) nor the pipe character.
That statement does not mean anything to me.
Do you need anything else?
