Shingled, not shielded. 

The drive manufacturer is supposed to tell you whether you are
buying a CMR or SMR spinning disk (or other weird tech, like
PMR or HAMR or...) and most of them do.

But not all of them, and not always in an obvious way.

The only such tech still on the market that people generally
ought to avoid is SMR.
