Not necessarily, no. I see this as a "forum" mode where you only receive e-mail for discussions in which you are participating. So in order to do this you need to stay subscribed (to eventually send mail), but you don't want to receive mail other than answers to your mail or followups to a discussion you joined, in which case you re-enable mail reception, and delete mail that is not for you.
