To my simple mind that suggests that some auto-configuration magic that

I have a Fuji-Xerox printer (they are Brother printers under the hood).
My problem with cups is it does a network scan on startup and locates
the printer by some broadcast discovery method. It then adds the printer
to the list despite my having added it manually earlier and assigns a
sub-optimal or even non-working ppd.
I end up with multiple printers with similar names only one of which
works - the one I manually configured and specifically set the ppd to be
a compatible brother ppd.
