I just tried with a Macbook Air laptop, and that prints fine as well (perhaps not surprisingly, given that a Mac desktop works).
So it looks like some sort of issue related to CUPS. Quite possibly it's a configuration error on my part, but I have no idea what I might have done wrong. I have another Xerox printer (a black-only, as opposed to colour, one) on the network, and printing to that works correctly from the debian stable system that is not working with the colour printer.
