234MB? On this here machine it's more like 8MB for the kernel and 12MB
for the initrd:

FWIW, I have
MODULES=dep
COMPRESS=lzma
in `/etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf`, which helps keep the size of
the initrd in check.
