I found this from an old post about Synaptic (the apt front-end), in the latter's "help page": Obsolete or locally installed - Display only packages that are not (for longer) (sic) included in one of the specified repositories. I guess the terminology is intended to cover all conceivable cases of why a package isn't found in the repositories, in the event the user grew confused by one or the other term that wasn't relevant to her situation, although for APT the two cases are indistinguishable. > > Have a nice day :) > > Thomas > > --
