Guix /is/ inspired by NixOS: they acknowledge that.

Definitely. And there are more ties between Debian and Guix as one might
think. Among other things, both are co-pioneers in the Reproducible Builds
effort (well, for Guix/NixOs, reproducibility is kind of... obvious?)

As far as professional use is concerned, bioinformatics seems to be one
of its happy users [1].
