Network Computing Report #329 http://www.networkcomputing.com/ Monday, December 8, 2003 ----------------------------------------------------------- Everybody talks about getting more bang for their IT buck. What does it take to maximize the total impact that IT spending has on the business? And how do you measure what you've gained? The IT Productivity PocketGuide is filled with tips & expert insights about what it takes to optimize IT's financial performance. Download your free copy! http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eeFT0BujCN0V40CDrW0Ao ----------------------------------------------------------- This week, we tested four route optimizer devices. If you can handle the complexity of BGP, Internap's FCP 100 has an outstanding mix of features, functionality and management. If DNS is more up your alley, Radware's LinkProof is manageable and scalable. Our editor's hot white paper pick discusses a new solution for complex IP networks. And it's the last chance to test your knowledge of securing the edge of your network. Take our latest TechQuiz today. As always, please feel free to message us directly if you have any comments or questions (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]). Once the MLS cache has been created, does the MLS use cut-through switching? That is, could the runts be propagated between the VLANs? http://www.nwc.com/forum/askexp/showReplies.jhtml?sid=1001&fid=30&tid=125400018 b) Shop Talk: Enterprise AV Suites After four years with McAfee Total AV suite, I have been testing alternatives. Others tested so far include NOD32, which is an extremely fast scanner but crashes Windows XP fairly regularly, and CA eTrust 7.0, which has sleek management, a competitive upgrade price that is excellent and no problems to report after five days--but no viruses have tested it yet. Administration is intuitive, I only had to make one support call to get everything working, and reports are simple and functional. I have not yet tested Symantec Enterprise AV, but the cost is approximately three times CA eTrust RFP. Does anyone else have comments? http://www.nwc.com/forum/shoptalk/showReplies.jhtml?sid=1001&fid=201000&tid=125500011 View all Forums. http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eeFT0BujCN0V40CCEu0AY ------------------------------------------------------------ 11) BuzzCut ------------------------------------------------------------ a) All Roads Lead to VoIP By Peter Morrissey Despite the glitches, don't dismiss Voice over IP or even Cisco's offering just yet. http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eeFT0BujCN0V40CFaE0AH b) Enterprise WLANs: Cisco Delivers the Goods By Dave Molta Cisco's share of the enterprise wireless LAN market may not add up to total dominance, but it's close. http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eeFT0BujCN0V40CFaF0AI c) Hackers of the World, Unite! By Michael J. DeMaria Good luck getting people to listen to hackers when the press uses the word to describe "online supervillains." http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eeFT0BujCN0V40CFaG0AJ ------------------------------------------------------------ 12) The Daily Blog ------------------------------------------------------------ a) Master and Slave: The Dark Side of Tech Terms Folks in Los Angeles are hoping to make the tech field a little more politically correct--they're asking computer equipment manufacturers, suppliers and contractors to stop using the terms "master" and "slave" when referring to primary and secondary hard disk drives. http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eeFT0BujCN0V40CFaH0AK b) The Segway/Skynet Connection Good Ol' Uncle Sam--always looking to take something relatively harmless and turn it into something the military can use (usually to blow things up). http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eeFT0BujCN0V40CFaI0AL Find more blogs and blog entries here. http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eeFT0BujCN0V40CCE60AV ------------------------------------------------------------ 13) The IT Agenda: Security: Set It, Don't Forget It ------------------------------------------------------------ The IT Agenda: Security: Set It, Don't Forget It By Jonathan Feldman Security vendors spend buckets of money on sophisticated marketing programs, and we buy into the hype because it's what we want to hear. http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eeFT0BujCN0V40CFaJ0AM ------------------------------------------------------------ 14) Mobile Pipeline: Choosing the Right Wireless Development Environment ------------------------------------------------------------ By Don MacVittie Selecting the right development environment for mobilized applications can mean the difference between success and failure. http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eeFT0BujCN0V40CFaK0AN Read more from TechWeb's Mobile Pipeline. http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eeFT0BujCN0V40CAPw0Aj ------------------------------------------------------------ 15) Industry Insights: Spam Rules ------------------------------------------------------------ By Mike Lee Most users can't identify legitimate senders, so they're spammed if they do respond and spammed if they don't. http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eeFT0BujCN0V40CFaL0AO ------------------------------------------------------------ 16) CMP Marketplace ------------------------------------------------------------ Manage data center costs and increase efficiency and productivity with Cyclade's AlterPath ACS console servers.
