Either as root (su) or sudo, if you have it installed type:
sudo less XFree86.0.log the lines where you see (EE) are probably where the problem arises. Armed with this information (again as root) type: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 which will enable you to change the configuration of the offending component (could be mouse or display most likely). You may need to try different configurations by trial and error.
