This is where we came in. :) If scanimage works for scanning I cannot see why xsane or simple-scan should not work too; both are simply frontends to the same system. The only thing I can suggest is to undo any changes made to configuration files when you were trying to set up network scanning or purge libsane and reinstall it and any packages which are removed. -- Brian.
