Can Jessie keep my home partition intact and just overwrite the other
partition?
Current Debian installer can be persuaded to do so, sure. You can do
even better - co-install Jessie with the current Wheezy just in case
something will go wrong with a new install.
...and then you have something to boot with, into a working session so
you can spent time googling on the broken bits. I keep Ubuntu on it's
own partition. You bet, I have had to use it. I just wouldn't advise
re-using your entire /home partition intact. All of those old .config
files are not always good to re-use if you are a vanilla user like me.
I've been around a LONG TIME, but I am no developer at all. So, I always
take the package maintainer's .config files every time. Ric
