Note that KDE also has an login manager called kdm which you maybe want
to install instead of gdm if you use KDE instead of Gnome.
    

Note even further that if, like me, you don't want to use either KDE or
GNOME, you can apt-get install xdm instead.  I prefer the most minimal,
gewgaw-free graphical environment.
