I have a quick question, have you got the graphical side of things working? ie. after you login in a terminal, does startx work? If not then you need that up and running first and then the above answers will solve your problem with the graphical login. An aside: There is also another app for package management that works very like apt-get, but deals with recommended and suggested packages. It is called aptitude, you use it in a similar way as apt-get, ie. aptitude install gdm.
