I have done both upgrade and dist-upgrade and got the same  type of
error.For dist-upgrade, the error is :-" Errors were encountered while
processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/libc-bin_2.11.3-3_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)"


The output of "dpkg -l | grep dpkg":-

client:/home/student# dpkg -l | grep dpkg
ii  apt                               0.6.46.4-0.1
Advanced front-end for dpkg
ii  dpkg                              1.13.25
 package maintenance system for Debian
ii  dpkg-dev                          1.13.25
 package building tools for Debian
