If you have this as the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list it is totally
invalid, which is why you get

> E: The list of sources could not be read.

Delete all its contents and, for now, have

   deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free

as the only line.

Then apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, reboot and apt-get dist-upgrade.

How well this will go I do not know because it isn't too easy to tell
what you are upgrading from. The output of the command 'cat /etc/issue'
would inform you and us.
