I've already reinstalled vlc and it made no difference, I did sudo apt-get remove vlc, sudo apt-get autoremove, sudo apt-get purge, sudo apt-get install vlc and just let it pull things in that it required.
I think that i've tried virtually every sound menu item available on vlc but all to no avail, sorry. Thanks Sharon.
