It may be something as simple as selecting the correct 'device' in VLC in the menu items of audio in VLC..the reason I say this is I had a similar problem not long ago and this was the solution. VLC tends to select the system default. As you've just changed over from pulseaudio to ALSA try reinstalling VLC again perhaps or check the menu for the output device and select the correct one. I don't suppose you meant to say you were trying to watch mp4 films..did you mean mp4 files? If this was the case, I'm not sure VLC will play mp4..isn't that a proprietary encoding from Nero?
